How yoga and homeopathy are two complementary sciences to relieve patients of their sufferings

As I always say, the naturalism should be the way of life. Among various natural methods of living, yoga and homeopathy are the ways of living. As regular and nutritious eating is the way of life to remain healthy, yoga and homeopathy are the ways that need to be inculcated in everyday life to avoid harsh effects of unnatural things and maintain harmony.

It is a myth that yoga should be done only by people who have some or the other problems related to their spine. “Yogah Chittavrutti Nirodhah” (Yoga is the way to balance and control our mind and various tendencies). We all have some or the other fallacies. Yoga teaches us how to gain control over these fallacies and cultivate better things in order to lead a happy and healthy life. As I keep saying in my blogs, no one can be happy without perfect health. Then why strive for things those deteriorate our health? If even after attaining those things, we will not be happy due to ill-health, what the value such things have?

Yoga is not just postures and exercise. Definitely these postures and exercise are important but one should realize why Yogasanas like Shavasana and Yoga-Mudra are included in them. These are the postures that give us complete harmony with oneself and utter relaxation from our worries. To be frank, relief from stress is the true way to attain perfect health. You seek whatever treatment, whatever costly strategies to alternate your health-status; you will not be successful in your attempt unless you win over stress and/or use it positively to do better.

Similarly, homeopathy is the science that entails how every individual is different from the rest, how a single treatment or remedy may fail to elicit effective cure in day to day maladies because of differences in the symptoms and personalities of these patients. Homeopathy is no doubt a difficult science and one must master the art of comprehending the patient’s personality and treat individually. But certainly when this is aptly done, the patient is relieved of his suffering tenderly yet completely.

What happens when both these sciences are joined together?

Many of my patients ask me why you send us some of the Yoga postures or stress about Pranayama when you send us prescriptions. Many times when patients do not know about asanas, I send them the URLs and related things about the asanas which I believe will make their suffering nil along with homeopathic medicines. Some of the examples are here-

(1) In patients of lumbar spondylosis or cervical spondylosis, I have found that when the homeopathic remedies like Lachnanthes, Paris q, Hypericum, kali carb or Rhus tox ameliorate the pain and suffering, the asanas like Pavan-muktaasana, dhanuraasana, paschimottanasana, etc help in faster relief.

(2) In obesity patients, when I prescribe constitutional medicines to the patients, the asanas like Yoga-mudra, Vajra-asana, Uttanapaad-asana, Leg-cycling and rotation pose, etc help a great deal. Moreover I have observed that people who find it difficult to control hunger spells, Yoga help them find control over their binge eating, which obviously leads to weight loss.

(3) In patients with recurrent allergies, along with constitutional medicines and medicines like Lemna minor, Sabadilla, Pothos, Senega, Ipecac or Pulsatilla, different yoga postures offer lasting relief. Also Pranayama helps a great deal in preventing future attacks.

These are just very few of the examples that I daily encounter. Most importantly, when taken and done under expert supervision, both Yoga and homeopathy do not lead to side effects. Changing your lifestyle while inculcating such habits may not be easy but it is certainly not impossible. Rather, once you change yourself to this, you will never fall back in the trap of unnatural things those drain away your natural energy and immunity!

How to Eat More Nutritiously

Nutrition can mean many different things to different people, depending on their outlook and view point. Good nutritious food doesn't have to taste bad. In fact, it can be quite tasty! If you follow the guidelines in this article, you'll be able to eat healthy and look good.

Be familiar with the different types and varieties of carbohydrates. A common misconception is that all carbs are unhealthy. This statement is utterly false! Your body needs complex carbohydrates to function effectively. Knowing these differences can help you to figure out what choices to make the next time you go grocery shopping.

Portion sizes and knowing when you are full are part of proper dieting and nutrition. Your metabolism will slow down as you get older, and you should adapt your diet accordingly. If you can listen to your body, it will prevent overeating.

Don't overdo it on the condiments. Use healthy alternatives instead of fatty and sugary choices. Opt for condiments with fewer calories and less fat. Salsa adds great flavor to a baked potato. Likewise, mustard is a healthier alternative to mayo. Eating healthy doesn't have to mean you give up taste; you just choose alternatives that add a different flavor.

Fruits, seeds and nuts are healthy, nutrient-rich snacks. They all contain proteins, minerals and compounds that they need to grow healthy. Their makeup is complex and provides a lot of nutrients for your body. This is what makes them nutritionally valuable. To get more seeds, nuts, and fruit in your diet, try a homemade trail mix.

Two roadblocks to getting into shape are a lack of motivation and an inability to begin an exercise and diet regime. Try to enjoy your exercise time. Consider these interesting suggestions.

It is best to prepare nutritious food for your child to carry for lunch. By packing cold lunches, you can be assured that your child is getting a healthy lunch. While school lunches provide a meal, you do not know what, where, or how it is prepared. When you pack a lunch yourself, you have total control over what goes into it. When you opt to let your kid buy lunch from school, you don't have much say in what they have to eat.

Teaching your children good eating habits is easier when you get creative in the kitchen and make learning fun. For example, you can cut healthy foods into fun shapes with them using cookie cutters. In addition to providing your child with an entertaining activity, you also give him the added incentive of eating healthy food because he helped to prepare it. If you mix in some dried fruit with a favorite whole-grain, low-sugar cereal, you can make a very nutritious trail mix with you child.

When enjoying restaurant fare, be sure to get the dressing on the side. Oftentimes, fats and preservatives that can be done without are included in dressings. You should choose oil and vinegar if possible, because the oil is good for your body, and vinegar is very heart-healthy.

It isn't that bad, is it? Granted, there is a lot of nutritional information out there. Sometimes you need some help to know where to start so you can apply this to your own diet. You are now well on your way to better nutrition.

3 Incredible Motivation Tips to Lose Weight

When it comes to weight loss, one of the most common things I hear all of the time is this:

"I'd love to lose weight, but I just don't have the motivation and the drive to do it!"

Sadly, this is a statement that is all too common in the modern world today. Saying this to yourself is like crushing your soul. You're already giving up before you even get started, so why even waste the time thinking about dropping a few pounds? With a mindset like this, it shouldn't be a surprise that weight loss is a battle that is hard-fought and tough to crack.

Giving Up Does More Harm Than Good

When you're faced with a challenge or conflict in life, giving up (or running away from the problem at hand) seems like the easiest way out - and it is. What many fail to realize is that while it might make you "feel better" at the time, the problem is still there. The longer you continue to avoid the issue, the worse things will get as time progresses. You will never move forward and will continue to remain stuck where you are until you decide to muster up the confidence to tackle those challenges now.

Don't even try to press the "easy button". It doesn't work and it never will. That probably doesn't leave you with a whole lot of hope if you're still not thinking twice about getting your tail in gear. Thankfully, we're going to make that all change right now!

How to Turn Things Around

There are a number of ways to increase your motivation to lose weight. The key is to remain consistent by implementing a variety of techniques that can help you stay focused on your task at hand. Lose that focus, and you risk your progress.

Worried about your lack of motivation lasting forever? Don't be. Instead, just check out these 3 incredibly effective ways to explode your motivation and help you keep your eye on the prize!

#1 - Break Down Goals into Smaller Chunks

If you want to get your motivation up and running, goal setting is crucial. However, it isn't as easy as just saying something along the lines of, "I'm going to lose 100 pounds in 6 months." While this can happen, setting a goal THAT big is an easy way to crush your motivation before you even get started. It's like staring at the peak of a mountain from the bottom and thinking only about reaching the peak, rather than the focusing on the steps you will take to get their first.

Making your goals more manageable is a matter of breaking them down into smaller chunks. If you're goal is to lose 100 pounds in 6 months, you know that 6 months is equivalent to roughly 26 weeks. If you take 100 and divide that by 26, you end up with a figure close to 3.87. That means in order to lose 100 pounds in 6 months, you would need to lose up to 3.87 pounds per week for a duration of 26 weeks. When you break it down like that, the climb up that mountain doesn't look so bad now, does it?

#2 - Don't Be Afraid to Reward Yourself

For some people, the reward of a healthier and better looking body isn't enough to get them in gear. That's why using an incentive can be a great way to give yourself that extra push.

The idea is simple - once you hit your target or goal, the incentive is yours to keep. Of course, it is up to you to choose how you want to setup your rewards and the goals you need to hit to get them.

The only way a reward will pay off and increase your motivation to get moving is if you stay true to your word and don't cave into temptation. Fortunately, there are ways around this for those who don't feel confident in sticking to their word. Websites like stickK give you the ability to challenge a group of friends or family and set "stakes" to hold you accountable for your goals. Miss out on your goal and you end up forking over some cash to a friend or charity. Meet your goal and the money is yours to keep. Wouldn't you stop putting off the gym and your clean eating if you knew that you had $100 on the line?

#3 - Join a Supportive Community

There is nothing better than having your own circle of support to help you through your ups and downs. That's why joining a supportive community (on or offline) with others who have similar goals and experiences can be one of the greatest tools to keep your motivation floored at all times. If you ever run into a situation where your focus is off or you're feeling down, talking with other members is enough to give you the courage to keep on keeping on.

Besides the incredible benefits of having a "sounding board" whenever you need it, joining a community gives you the opportunity to reach out and help others, too!

It's Your Time to Shine

Your weight loss journey is going to be filled with a number of highs and an equal amount of lows. No matter what happens, just remember these 3 motivational tips and put them to work. When you do, you will
realize how easy it is to stick to your plan and make your goals and dreams become a reality!

Interview with Vickie Russell Bell Continued Teaching Yoga to Students with Parkinsons

Baxter: Can you talk a bit about what sort of experience or training would be optimal for a teacher out there thinking about doing this sort of class for folks with Parkinson’s?

Vickie: Teachers interested in working with PWPD need to have a strong background in teaching asana and adapting classic poses. Assisting a teacher who works with disabilities or special populations (or even someone who is adept at working with seniors) would be very useful. If a teacher is interested in eventually working with a group, starting solo with a PD student who is mobile and only slightly limited might help her begin to understand this population.

There are often local PD organizations that offer classes or info sessions for those interested in furthering their knowledge. I am currently training a number of yoga teachers who want to take this work into the community and I hope to expand this educational opportunity further.

Baxter: And final advice to either students with Parkinson’s, or teachers interested in working with this population?

Vickie: The thing that drives my success in working with this population is this motto: Teach to their possibility, not their disability! Be willing to be light, to play ant, to constantly continue to learn.

Vickie Russell Bell was born and raised in Ohio, and is a journalist by education. She teaches yoga because she loves to. Her intention is to help her students increase their level of daily awareness through their body, breath and experience. She is a graduate of the Piedmont Yoga Studio Advanced Training Program and is a certified “Relax and Renew Trainer” through Judith Lasater’s accredited program. See here for more information.

Top 8 Tips to Stay Healthy during Ramadan!

A Guide to Healthy Fasting during Ramadan

{For health queries, mail to- contact@drshreya.com}

Ramadan is a holy month observed by millions of followers of Islam throughout the world. One of the principle parts of Ramadan is following a fast that might be tedious for some. But the fasting during Ramadan is prevalent since long and most of the people love the spiritual concept behind the fasting. No wonder despite suffering from several hurdles along the way, many people fast during the holy month.

However, if we follow certain rules during our fast, we will not only remain healthy but also can enjoy the fasting while performing our religious pursuits and actually the purpose of physical and spiritual cleansing will be served.

Here are some expert tips to have healthy Ramadan-

(1)    Instead of having two heavy meals after sunset and before sunrise, opt for three portioned meals- one after sunset, second 5 hours later before you sleep, and third before sunrise. This spaces your intake well so that the sugar levels are maintained even in diabetics.
(2)    Stay away from habits like smoking at least during this month of fasting, because tobacco with just two heavy meals often plays havoc for the health of the smoker.
(3)    Water intake is one of the most vital things to keep tracking during this month. As the fasting person doesn’t take water in between, often he suffers from problems like acidity, constipation and/or urine infections etc. To avoid this, as soon as the sun sets, first attempt should be made to have plenty of water, lemon water, or coconut water.
(4)    Suhoor meal (early morning meal before sunrise) should never be missed. It is this meal that keeps your metabolism chucking well throughout the day. Only one meal after sunset makes your digestive system extremely weak and also you may suffer from liver imbalances, thus unbalancing your lipid profile.
(5)    It is good to have food with low glycemic index- some cereal, yoghurt, or a fruit etc. This type of eating slowly releases energy and also helps the person keep the hunger pangs at bay. One can also go for other complex carbohydrates like barley, wheat, oats, lentils, whole meal flour, semolina, beans, etc.
(6)    Deep fried food like samosas, pakodas, etc should be avoided as far as possible. Heavily processed fast burning foods like refined sugars, white flour, chocolates, biscuits, cakes, and other sweetmeats should be avoided too.
(7)    Excess tea and coffee usually makes people suffer from dehydration during the month. Tea and coffee are considered as diuretics. When you indulge in them, you tend to lose more water through frequent urination.
(8)    It is good if the person doesn’t sway a lot from the day to day food that he or she is used to otherwise, during this blessed month too. All major food groups should be taken into consideration while preparing the delicacies during the month.
Thus, if we take some precautions during this blessed month of Ramadan, we certainly can enjoy the whole month with health and spirituality exemplified. Rather only if we remain healthy throughout, we can concentrate on our spiritual pursuits and at the end of Ramadan can boast of having cleansed body, mind, and spirit!

3 Simple Steps to Lasting Weight Loss

By Chet Sandeksi

There are many hundreds of thousands of individuals who struggle with weight loss. These people typically strive diligently to lose the excess weight they carry with mixed results.

For some, simply eating right and performing regular exercise is enough of an effort to make their target weight. But for others, the process can be more difficult.

Millions of Americans are obese, and one million more are overweight. Why do so many Americans have problems with weight?

Common cardio exercises such as running, walking, climbing stairs, and using an elliptical machine have all been proven effective at strengthening a person's cardio health, burning calories, and shedding pounds. But the common theme for all of these cardio exercises is the use of a person's legs; and for some individuals who are striving to lose weight, using their legs while exercising is not an option due to other health concerns or physical limitations.

First, they created a diet that dropped his daily intake of calories to 2,000. His diet consisted of egg-white omelets, fresh salads, chicken fajitas, fish fillet and spring greens. This diet did two things for him. First, it reduced the sheer amount of food Manuel was eaten. Instead of eating several hearty meals, his food intake was reduced drastically. The second thing it did was concentrate his diet on healthier foods. He received a more balanced diet that contained all of the normal, healthy nutrients that the body needs. With a controlled diet, the body can start shedding excess fat.

The reason why people struggle to accept that a lifestyle change is needed is because they are comfortable with the way they are currently living with. Very few people are accepting of the idea that they need to change several big things about their life.

Instead, the person's arms are performing the vigorous movements that get the heart rate up and the cardio health a boost. Working the bag as fast as one can for a period of three minutes in a set will provide the cardio workout one is looking for.

If a punching bag is not a good fit for the needs of the person looking to perform healthy cardio, then perhaps turning to the pool would be a respectable alternative. Swimming laps in a pool, like the other standard cardio exercise, has long since been a proven and effective cardio work out.

But they do not want to make the life changes necessary to do those things, so they are always on the lookout for a way to lose weight without the effort and pain of change. The sad thing is, when people go on these gimmicky weight loss plans, they usually end up gaining the weight right back when they stop the diet plan.

For those more drastic cases, some may wish to consider undergoing weight loss surgery. Weight loss surgery performed by medical professionals is a viable option for those who cannot lose weight through maintaining a proper diet and regular exercise.

Its hard to imagine I didnt drive for 12 years

I learned to drive at 15. I had the spectre of perfectionism looming over my lessons, where I assumed that I should be able to just learn without trial and error, and that something was seriously wrong with me because I did indeed make errors, like changing lanes without putting on my signal. My instructor was patient, and even gave a particularly riled up driver the finger when I was struggling along. I started a list of all the driving mistakes I made, and felt overwhelmed with all I had to fix. I kept driving through college, maneuvering a Chevette, which had absolutely no oomph after 35 mph. Then on to driving a van as part of my workstudy.

But when my husband and I got married during graduate school, his car was a stick shift, and I had learned on an automatic. I only had one experience with a manual transmission, and that was the day I got my driver's license and my father took me out in his tiny Honda, and expected me to know how to operate the clutch. It was the longest block of my life. I started by rolling backward and ended with much lurching, and felt entirely responsible for my deficiency, rather than realizing my father was expecting me to learn by magic.

My husband took me to a parking lot with the stick shift car, and I was sufficiently scared of making any mistakes that I didn't ask for another lesson. In the meantime, my husband was more than glad to drive me anywhere I wanted to go. He'd wait for me, find a place to sit or walk. When we got a new car 5 years later, I asked that it be an automatic transmission so I could drive if I needed to. But after one nerve wracking trek down to the grocery store, with every muscle tense, and my hands clamped on the steering wheel, I shied away from driving again.

Later, my husband told me that he was so willing because he was afraid that if I had an accident while driving, that it would send me over the edge with my anxiety. For 12 years we did everything together, "joined at the hip". Anxiety can tell you something important, an actual threat that needs to be heeded, but parasitic anxiety lives only to perpetuate itself. Much of my perfectionism was a child's way of dealing with the world--"If I am perfect, then I will be loved. Don't ever make a mistake." And the OCD latched onto this, amplifying the fear. I couldn't imagine myself driving, and therefore, until I could be certain I could drive, I avoided it.
